A performance analysis of carrier Ethernet schemes based on Multiple Spanning Trees

چکیده
Due to recent advances, Ethernet is starting to move from Local area networks to carrier networks. Nevertheless as the requirements of carrier networks are more demanding, the technology needs to be enhanced. Schemes designed for improving Ethernet to match carrier requirements can be categorized in two classes. The first class improves Ethernet control components only, and the second class improves both Ethernet control and forwarding components. Related work on the first class perform comparison between proposals of the same class, thus without taking into account the second class. This paper studies the performance of the schemes that improve Ethernet control components only. The functionality implemented by means of spanning trees is generalized, and their performance is evaluated by proposing an Integer Linear Program (ILP). The ILP determines both the required resources as well as the performance that can be achieved when Ethernet forwarding components are used optimally. Additionally, these results are compared with the performance of the second class technologies that improve both Ethernet control and forwarding components.

An optimization framework for the energy management of carrier ethernet networks with Multiple Spanning Trees
We propose an energy management framework to optimize the energy consumption of networks using the Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol such as Carrier Grade Ethernet networks. The objective is to minimize the energy consumption of nodes and links while considering QoS constraints. The energy management is done through the Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP) by choosing from a given set the most ...
متن کاملA new carrier grade aggregation network model for delivering broadband services to fast moving users
In this article, we present the research challenges that are associated with designing a cost-effective network architecture for delivering broadband services to fast moving users (e.g. in trains). We specifically extended the standard Switched Ethernet technology towards a truly Carrier Grade network solution for fast moving users. Prototype implementations allow us to evaluate dynamic tunnel ...
متن کاملMultiple Enhanced Self-protected Spanning Trees Based Architecture for Recovery from Single Failure in Metro Ethernet
Carriers and service providers are rushing to provide Ethernet-based virtual private network services in metro area network (MAN) as the most cost effective way to address the needs of the enterprise network market. To address the fast recovery from any signal failure issue in the Metro Ethernet, we propose a metro Ethernet architecture based on multiple Enhanced Self-protected Spanning Trees (...
متن کاملImproving Load Balance of Ethernet Carrier Networks Using IEEE 802.1S MSTP with Multiple Regions
With IEEE 802.1S Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol, an Ethernet operator can define different network regions. A Common Spanning Tree (CST) is defined in such a way that a link failure inside a region does not affect the CST outside the region and additional Spanning Trees inside each region can be configured to achieve better load balance. We propose a procedure to determine the MSTP parameters ...
متن کاملOptimal Self-healing of Smart Distribution Grids Based on Spanning Trees to Improve System Reliability
In this paper, a self-healing approach for smart distribution network is presented based on Graph theory and cut sets. In the proposed Graph theory based approach, the upstream grid and all the existing microgrids are modeled as a common node after fault occurrence. Thereafter, the maneuvering lines which are in the cut sets are selected as the recovery path for alternatives networks by making ...
